The Importance of Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is not something you see on the surface, but we are constantly surrounded by technological threats. This is why it is crucial for individuals and businesses to be vigilant and most importantly – protected. Cybersecurity has become a necessity for people to protect their personal information that is stored virtually. With the pandemic creating an undeniable shift of dependence on technology, the excessive need to protect a variety of systems and databases has increased tremendously. The internet is now more than ever flooded with information due to this new remote way of living. This new virtual world has become our reality and the need for cyber protection is critical. This type of technological transformation our society is adjusting to is unpredictable — which is leading to individuals all over the world facing some type of technological challenge. Whether it is finding a safe way to offer online courses for educational purposes, or protecting businesses and their clients’ information, cybersecurity has become a huge asset in helping our society smoothly transition into this unknown realm.

Our world has revolved around the Internet of Things (IoT) and new technologies for quite some time, however it has been said that our world has technologically fast forwarded 20 years in just a month due to COVID-19 (Secureworks). With social distancing being highly enforced, people were abruptly forced to work on remote desktops rather than within their usual office building.  This big switch has shed light on the importance of cybersecurity and why it is necessary to utilize for personal and business-related reasons. Cybersecurity is used to protect networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access or criminal use and the practice of ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CISA.gov). There are numerous standards and regulations put in place for industries to follow and these are to ensure the safety, privacy, and protection of current customers and potential customers. Especially now that some businesses are encouraging BYOD (bring your own device), there are even more safety concerns involving the privacy of employees, companies, and clients.

Cybersecurity today is extremely necessary and will only become more and more obligatory as globalization continues to flourish.

With new technological innovations created every day, we will regularly be playing a game of catch-up. These new ways of communicating and conducting business may be more convenient, but they will always come with cyber threats and risks. Cybersecurity methods are there to mitigate threats, protects systems, and protects sensitive information. Without cybersecurity, data can be lost, information can be stolen, a breach could occur, and networks/systems can crash. Cybersecurity today is extremely necessary and will only become more and more obligatory as globalization continues to flourish. There is an abundance of information out there for cyberhackers to steal, or even to sell on the black market for their own personal gain. Whether it would be your personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), credit card information, home address, social security number, etc. once your information is out in the cyber world, there is no way for you to get it back. Especially for large businesses who have experienced breaches like Target or Equifax who had millions of customers’ personal information stolen. Years later, these companies are still cleaning up after their lack of cybersecurity measures. The cost of cybersecurity is miniscule compared to paying for the aftermath of a cyber incident. It is crucial for every person to learn how they can protect themselves.
